Hunger Games: Why CICO is a Lie

Aug 17, 2021

For decades we’ve been told that weight loss is “basic math” or “simple science.”

We just need to eat less and exercise more.

This is the philosophy behind the “Calories In / Calories Out” (CICO) mentality, but the process of weight loss is more than just a simple math equation.

We debunked this diet myth YEARS ago, yet it still perpetuates the weight loss and fitness space today, making it difficult to let go of these outdated thoughts and beliefs.

Think about it - there are billion dollar companies (not to mention the entire fitness industry) founded on this idea that you can just eat less and exercise your way to the body you crave.

But this doesn’t work for two key reasons:

  1. This thinks of your body as a bunsen burner without any regard for:
    1. the quality of calories,
    2. how your body processes specific calories,
    3. your hormones,
    4. or the fact that any decrease in calorie intake will always decrease your natural calorie expenditure.
  2. Basic math doesn't account for all the emotional triggers and times we reach for food because we’re bored, tired, lonely, stressed, looking for comfort or to simply relax.

Join me on today’s episode as I break down the science and psychology behind this myth and show you why it doesn’t work in practice.

What’s in this episode:

  • Why it’s so hard to let go of this diet philosophy.
  • The #1 flaw of this methodology no one talks about.
  • The psychological impact of calorie restriction.
  • The real steps to sustainable weight loss if it’s not about counting calories, macros, or exercising harder.
